Cemeteries Dept to Utilize MRT Project Soil Excavation

Jakarta Parks and Cemeteries Department plans to utilize the remaining soil excavation of Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) project to dredge cemetery land which is currently still a swamp. It is conducted in a bid to trick the lack of cemetery land problem in the capital city.

We saw there is a chance to use the excavation of MRT project. Just dispose the soil excavation there (Tegal Alur TPU) than spend money for disposal

Based on the department’s data, cemetery land in Jakarta reaches 596.68 hectares. But from that amount, 201.16 hectares are still swamps, thus they need to be dredged.

“Most of the lands are still swamps and cannot be used as cemetery area because the lands are not solid,” told Head of Jakarta Parks and Cemeteries Department, Nandar Sunandar, Wednesday (10/1).

Thousands of Graves in Budi Dharma TPU Inundated

According to Sunandar, due to lack of fund, solidification of those swamps cannot be realized yet. Therefore, he decides to conduct dredging using the remaining excavation of MRT project, especially for Tegal Alur Public Cemetery (TPU) in Kalideres, West Jakarta.

“For land solidification, we do not have fund yet. But, we saw there is a chance to use the excavation of MRT project. Just dispose the soil excavation there (Tegal Alur TPU) than spend money for disposal,” he stated.

Sunandar admitted that his request has been approved by PT MRT. Unfortunately, he did not mention the width of Tegal Alur TPU’s land that will be solidified.

“I forget its width,” he said.
